Approach To Painting
I enjoy painting in oils, acrylics and watercolour but I also like drawing media such as pastel, ink and pencil. I have a background in Portraiture and I have enjoyed painting for friends and family as well as exhibiting portraits in shows. I have lately developed my urban landscape sketches into mixed media works to develop a deeper exploration of structural motifs.
I studied at Newcastle Art School after leaving school and later went on to add a Teachers Certificate and Post Graduate degree under Art Lecturers at University of Newcastle.I have worked as a Visual Arts Teacher in NSW and NT states in Public and Private schools. As well as being a part time Art Lecturer and Tutor at University of Newcastle. I have taught Children’s Art Classes from my studio in Adamstown since 1991. In 2016 I became the Art Director at Society of Artists, organising our visiting Art Tutors for workshops for our members.
I painted the portrait of Theo Rule for the 2017 Portrait Painter’s Hunter Exhibition. I had to look for a subject to paint that I considered to be an inspirational Novocastrian .I chose Theo Rule after seeing his Grainery Theatre play “Mrs Monacelli’s Christmastime”. I admired Theo’s talent for theatrical performance that draws people from all over Newcastle with a quirky mix of humor, music and meaning. As a playwright he reminds me of a Vaudevillian theatre pioneer. People always respond so favorably to the layers of performances that are delivered. I have tried to capture that heroic and youthful charm in my painting ,he really seems to invite you in for a closer look with the outstretched hand almost pulling you into the canvas and the message in his face says: “ here there is something good and true”!
